The brief
Laing O'Rourke, a global leader in construction, engineering, and manufacturing, aimed to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of their innovative Lattice floor system integration during project bids. They faced the challenge of optimizing design to reduce waste and improve productivity in manufacturing workflows. To address this, they partnered with KOPE to digitalize and automate their design authoring processes.
The primary objective of the project were to automate the layout of the lattice floor components, across all levels of a project and improve accuracy and reduce errors in design, expedite project timelines, and seamlessly integrate offsite construction principles into mainstream projects to respond to many more bids throughout the year.
The solution
KOPE utilized its advanced software solutions to digitalize Laing O'Rourke's Lattice floor system. This involved capturing component data, such as panel sizes, build-ups, and manufacturing limitations, along with the assembly and construction logic required for effective manufacturing and on-site delivery. The key steps included utilising our library of standardized algorithmic strategies tailored to lattice floor systems and developing custom algorithms tailored to Laing O’Rourke’s unique behaviours.
To then integrate the Lattice floor system into KOPE's digital platform, utilizing cloud-based tools for real-time collaboration and optimizing of design configurations to maximise standardization, and material usage.
For a 10-storey mixed-use building in the West End of London, the project design file was uploaded to KOPE’s cloud-based software. The floors within the design model were identified and translated into standardized and optimized components using KOPE’s product configurator, and generating a 3D model. From that 3D model KOPE generates bid deliverable and structural analysis in other tools.
The results
The digitalization resulted in a 25% acceleration of design processes and a 15% reduction in waste through optimized material usage. Within minutes, KOPE configured and applied manufacturable lattice floor panels throughout the model with a high level of standardization and suitability across all floors.
The digitalization of Laing O'Rourke's Lattice floor system by KOPE not only met but exceeded project goals. Laing O’Rourke quickly generated optimal design layouts, a task that previously took skilled teams days to complete manually. This allowed them to generate layouts for all floor plates instantly and identify areas unsuitable for the Lattice floor system.
